God is infinitely wise: "Wisdom," in the Bible, "is knowing the greatest goal in any situation, and the best way to achieve that goal." Wisdom sees the big picture, in focus, with each part in its proper relationship to the rest of the smaller pictures. Wisdom is different from knowledge. You can have knowledge without wisdom. There are a lot of brilliant fools. But you cannot have wisdom without knowledge, because in order to discern the best way to achieve a goal, you have need to integrate, to fuse together all kinds of factors from various sources of knowledge and experience. Can the unwise try to gauge the wisdom of the wisest of all? At best, he can fall at His feet and worship Him as the created is to praise His Creator. The Great God knows our limitations and, in His Wisdom, does the best for us. Daniel 2:21-22 “And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.”
God has “lavished upon us” the saving grace of the gospel “in all wisdom and insight” Ephesians 1:8 “Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence. In Christ, God gives believers “the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation”. Ephesians 1:17 “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:” Paul prays that God would fill the saints “with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding”. The apostle proclaims Christ, “warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom” to present everyone mature in Christ. In Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” Thus our Lord is the epitome of Wisdom.
The ultimate wisdom of God is seen in the redemption of man. God decreed that the transgression of law would result in death. This was the greatest tragedy for humanity. The wisdom of God lies in the fact that without breaking His pronouncement, He circumvents the entire mechanism in the plan of redemption to save humanity from eternal death. The one point at which Christ is explicitly called the wisdom of God in the New Testament is in relation to his redemptive work on the cross. This proves the sovereignty and supremacy of God. No created being can in any way frustrate the pleasure of God. Satan was defeated on the cross and was shown his place. Likewise, Jesus defeated death in His resurrection. The cross of Christ is always the defining factor. Thus, the wisdom of God plays an effective role in securing our salvation.
In the New Testament wisdom is strikingly reoriented around the cross and around the works and ways of Christ and sets a new pattern for life. Wisdom in the Old Testament was to lead to a life of virtue. The Psalmist says of God, in Psalms 147:5 “Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.” In Jeremiah 32:19 it is written, “Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:”
