The Lordship of God refers to God's supreme authority, sovereignty, and rule over all creation and the lives of individuals. It is directly related to our salvation. Thus, we read in Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
The title ‘lord’ means ruler, owner, and master. When we confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, we state our conviction that He is the supreme ruler and master of the universe. Colossians 1:16-17 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him, all things consist.” Jesus Christ is Lord and Master over all the spheres and dimensions of the cosmos, including the many galaxies beyond our cognizance. Jesus Christ is the master of the universe. He has been given absolute authority to rule both heaven and earth and everything in it.
The Lordship of God encompasses several key aspects:
Sovereignty: God is portrayed as the supreme ruler and king of the universe. He has absolute and supreme authority over everything, and nothing happens without His knowledge and permission. Psalm 103:19, states, "The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all."
Creation: The Bible teaches that God is the creator of the world and everything in it. As the Creator God, He holds authority over all His creation. Further, as the Creator of the Sabbath, He is the Lord of the Sabbath.
Covenant: In the Old Testament, God entered into covenants with various us. These covenants established His Lordship and the terms of His relationship with His people.
Redemption and Salvation: God's Lordship is in the context of redemption and salvation. Christians believe that through Jesus, God's reign and authority were made known, and salvation is offered to humanity. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray, "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven," reflecting the supremacy of God's rule.
Worship and Obedience: Acknowledging God's Lordship entails worshiping Him and obeying His commandments. The Bible emphasizes the importance of living in obedience to God's will and recognizing His authority in every aspect of life.
Judgment: The concept of God's Lordship also includes the idea of divine judgment. God is the ultimate judge who will hold every person accountable for their actions. This is seen in Romans 14:11, which states, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God."
Overall, the Lordship of God in the Bible is a foundational concept that underlies many other theological themes, including His sovereignty, creative power, covenant relationships, role in redemption, and the call for worship and obedience. It serves as a guiding principle for the beliefs and practices of many religious traditions.
