Jesus heals an Invalid at Bethesda The miracle of the healing of the invalid, who had been crippled for thirty-eight years at the pool of Bethesda, is given in John 5:1-18. Jesus met the man at the Pool of Bethesda, a place where people went in the hope of being healed of their ailments. According to popular belief, an angel would come down into the pool and “stir up the water.” The first person to get into the pool after the stirring of the water “was made well from whatever disease or infirmities with which he was afflicted” (John 5:4). This man had been an invalid for thirty-eight years” Jesus asked the man if he wanted to be healed. The man replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me” (verse 7). Jesus swept aside all superstition and told the man, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk” (John 5:8). The man was instantly cured, and “he picked up his mat and walked” (verse 9). The man did not need the enchanted water. What the man needed was Jesus. The obedience and faith of the man who healed him. We also learn that sin may also cause sickness. After Jesus healed the man, he found him in the temple and warned him to stop sinning, or something worse might happen to him. This gave us a clue that the man’s sickness was caused by sinning, and he had to pay dearly for it for 38 years. Sin causes sickness and separation from God. We should abstain from it. Jesus Heals a Man’s withered hand Mark 3:1-5 “And he entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there who had a withered hand.2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace 5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. The Pharisees were watching Jesus to see if he would heal the man on the sabbath. In Mathew 12:10 the Pharisees ask Jesus if it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath. Jesus replies to them by saying, “And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.” Then the Lord commands the man to stretch forth his hand, and it is restored in full. The bottom line is that there can be no obstruction to doing good, irrespective of the time or day. The only exception is when the obstruction comes from satan. When the Lord asked the man to stretch forth his hand, he obeyed and, in faith, was healed. Jesus wants to do good and do it immediately, which He did. Ironically, many people came to him to be healed on the Sabbath, as He was sure to be found in the synagogue, and also be accessible to them. All who came went in peace.
