The greatness of God is the ability of God to show that He is superior to all, living or non-living, physical, spiritual, and so on. Our God is great in size, great in strength, great in His abilities, great in wisdom, and much more. Luke 1:37 “For with God nothing will be impossible.” The greatness of God speaks of His absolute rule and power over all things. His endless resources. His unimaginable power to do as He pleases and for whomever He pleases. He is King of all, even of those who would deny. The word great is used in many English versions of the Bible to capture the meaning of the Greek and Hebrew words describing God’s superior character qualities.
Among many other places, Psalm 145:3 declares, “Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.” Dozens of verses describe God as “great” and give as evidence His wondrous works in describing a person, the word great means “preeminent, above the norm, or distinguished.” It also implies superior character or quality. So, when the Bible describes God as “great,” it sets the Lord apart from human beings we may consider “great” and calls attention to His worthiness to be worshiped and adored. Psalms 5:7 “But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.”
When people enter into the presence of a royal, who has only the earthly majesty unlike what God has, they are expected to bow in honour. The majestic one whom they stand in front of inspires awe and reverence. But our God, our Saviour, is the true King and the only God. He dwells in an unapproachable light. I Timothy 6:16 “Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” He sits on a throne, surrounded by creatures that live to give Him glory. We haven’t even scratched the surface of understanding the greatness and majestic nature of God. But with the little knowledge we do have, we join Jude’s praise in verse 25 by saying, “To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.”
God is so great that He cannot be compared with anything or anyone else. Psalms 71:19 “Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!” Since He created everything in existence, He is far superior to those He created. After all, the created cannot become the Creator. God is bigger, in the sense that He cannot be confined by time or space. He is so great that He can use anything. I Corinthians 1:27 “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;” He is infinite, while all created things are finite. Psalm 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” God, in fact, defines greatness, and all other uses of the word are mere echoes of that greatness.
