means God is unchanging in his nature, true to his Word, has promised salvation to his people, and will keep his promises forever. He is worthy of eternal trust no matter how unlikely his promises seem. The faithfulness of God is true and has been proven many times. In the Holy Scriptures, we can see that God is faithful and His Word is true. Hebrews 6:18 says it is impossible for God to lie, nor can He break an unconditional promise that He says He will fulfill. Every covenant He made is kept. Every promise or foretelling has or will come true. Nothing in heaven or on earth can prevent God from accomplishing all that he has promised his people through Jesus Christ. This reliability of God should be a great source of comfort and strength for God’s people as they repeatedly fail and go through trials and suffering.
Accounts of covenants between God and His people can be found approximately 277 times in the Bible. Deuteronomy 7:9 says “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments." Many places in Scripture extol the faithfulness of God. Lamentations 3:22–23 says, “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Psalm 119:89–90 says, “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. 90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.” Here faithfulness is equated with God’s Word. God speaks never-ending truth. What God speaks is final, immutable, and stands for all times to come. If God spoke something a thousand years ago, it still stands. He is faithful to His Word, because His Word is an expression of His character. The promises He made still hold true because He does not change. Malachi 3:6 “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore, ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” God remains faithful to His promises, even though we are often unfaithful to Him. II Timothy 2:13 “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.”
When we study God’s Word, a pattern emerges. We learn that God never changes and never lies. We learn through Scripture that God has never failed in the past. He was always true to His Word. When He said He would do something, He did it. With this background, we begin to build trust in His proven character. God is so faithful that anyone who seeks Him can find Him. Faith is a gift, but even a gift must be opened to be enjoyed. As we implement our faith, we begin to realize more and more about God’s faithfulness to us.
I Corinthians 1:9 “God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.” I Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so you can stand up under it.” II Thessalonians 3:3 - “The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.” In I John 1:9 we are told, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
