The Bible opens not with proof of God’s existence but underlines that He is very much there and is also the Creator God through Whom this world has been created. Genesis 1:1 states “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This fundamental assertion of Scripture assumes that the reader not only knows that God already exists but has also confirmed the fact of who this God is. Throughout the Scriptures, belief in a creator God is treated as normal and natural for all human beings, even though many have fallen into confusion about the true identity of this God. Psalm 19 vividly expresses a doctrine of natural revelation: the entire created universe ‘declares’ and ‘proclaims’ the glorious works of God. Proverbs tell us that “the fear of the Lord” is the starting point for knowledge and wisdom. Denying God’s existence is therefore intellectually and morally untenable and also foolish. Psalms 14:1 “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.” Indeed, the dominant concern throughout the bible is that God is.
It is to be understood that no one can see God. God is holy and His revelation in person is not possible as His holiness will consume us. Thus, to say that the existence of God is based on seeing Him is humanly impossible. The Bible confirms in Exodus 33:20 “And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.” Just as light and darkness do not gel together, likewise, it is to be clearly understood that sin and holiness do not go together. Righteousness is the very antithesis of unrighteousness or sin. Hebrews 12:29 “For our God is a consuming fire.” The righteousness of God destroys all unrighteousness, and as sinners, we cannot face God or for that matter see Him and live.
It thus logically follows that we have to believe in the existence of God through His powerful works and presence. Hebrews 11:6 states “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” The evidence of God exists in our daily human experiences. Romans 1:19–20 “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” Psalm 19:1 “ The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” It applies to the apparent design of the universe around us. Human life compels belief that truth, deception, love, hate, goodness, evil, etc., are real and meaningful. The overwhelming majority of people throughout history have been inclined to believe in a reality greater than the physical.
Accepting the existence of God is a profound rational move of trusting not our limitations and myopic imagination, but in the one who made everything. To believe there is God in our lives, Who will protect us, take care of us, and bless us is the strongest proof of the existence of God. If we believe in this, we will experience a profound difference in our lives and then finally believe that our God is there to take care of us.
