There are two aspects to what God can do. In the first place, by virtue of being the Uncreated God with unimaginable and unfettered powers, He can do anything whatsoever. The very fact that He created this world by word of His mouth speaks volumes of His immense powers. The second aspect is what He can and will do for us. Ephesians 3:14-21 is one of the most sublime prayers in all the Holy Scriptures. It is a prayer for spiritual strength. This prayer is for that ableness that God can bestow upon us in all the circumstances of life.
Almost every translation of the Bible features the word “able” for Ephesians 3:20. The God’s Word Translation is one of a handful, which says, “He can do.” If one were to define “able,” “can do” would be the definition, so there is no change of nuance. The same holds true with Hebrews 7:25 which says, “He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him.” In II Corinthians 9:8, Paul declares, “God is able to make all grace abound to you.” In Jesus’ own words, “God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham” (Luke 3:8). Thus, the infinite ability of God is beyond our limited understanding of ableness.
There is nothing outside of the Lord’s power which He cannot accomplish. There is nothing of which we ask God that he is not capable, and yet our imaginations cannot conceive of the extent of his power and ability. Our prayers are small compared with his power. We simply cannot fathom this level of power. God possesses infinite, complete, and perfect power. None of us can make that claim. Our capabilities are limited, but God is able to do everything He wills.
The Lord is able: Jude 1:24 “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,” His power works within his people to make them righteous. We all sin, but when we are presented to the Father, his work through Jesus has cleansed us, and made us ready to approach the throne. Not only will we be ready, but we will be filled with joy through his generous work as well. Furthermore, if God makes a promise, he will keep it because he is faithful, and nothing can stop him. Numbers 24:19 “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”
He is not only capable of healing the sick and raising the dead but also of transforming souls. II Corinthians 5:17 describes this transformation: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” Paul’s point is that the work is not done by us because we are not powerful in our own right. He is saying that the power is a promised inheritance to all who believe in Jesus for Salvation.
